SPICEGIRLS
*HISTORY
OF THE FAB 5 GONE 4*
1993/1994
Early
March, Victoria, Mel C, Mel B all attended an audition for an all girl
band. Contestants were from ages 18 to 23. Every girl that auditioned had
only 30 seconds to prove their talents. All 3 girls - and another named
Michelle - got the gig. Geri, however, missed out on the first audition,
and begged the organisers to give her an audition the next day. As a result,
Geri was tested, and, given the part.
Late
June, the girls started to work in a recording studio, but Michelle's
lack of enthusiam resulted in her wuiiting the band and she was replaced
by Emma. Just after this, from July to March in 1994, the girls lived together
in a small house in maidenhead. At this time they were on social support,
struggling with their money.
Just
after Mid August, the girls recorded a song called "Sugar and Spice", which
is where the name "Spice" (above) came from. Even though the track was
such an influence on the band, it was, unfortunatley never released.
October
approached and the girls decided to sack their current management group.
They then contacted songwrite, Eliot Kennedy, after finding his number
in a phone book. He helped co-write "LOVE THING" and "SAY YOU'LL BE THERE"
A year
later, August 1994, the girls were introduce to the company, ABSOLUTE,
Which later produced their first l.p.
1995
A deal
was signed with Simon Fuller to become their manager, in Early March. Between
March right through to May, the girls recorded the album, "Spice."
At this
time, record companies were battling with each other to sign the girls
up. By September, VIRGIN RECORDS signed them up. By late October,
the girls performed at a raceway, and, security was shocked when they started
getting carried away and climbing up onto a statue. As much as they tried,
Security couldnt stop them!
In November,
they signed up with music publisher Windswept Pacific. Between September
1995 and July 1996 they spent writing more songs.
1996
They
headed of to London to film their first Music video, "Wannabe." It was
aiired on a UK cable TV pop music channel, and gets played almost 70 times
in 1 week.
"Wannabe"
is released in July, and goes straight to No.1 making British Music history
- being the only British group to go number one with their debut single.
"Wannabe" continued to sell, and stayed @ number 1 in the UK for 17 weeks,
and sold 1.25 million in thed UK ALONE!
In September,
they headed off to Mojave Desert to film "Say you'll be there." It is released
in October, and debuts at number One in the UK. On November the 4th, "SPICE"
the album, is released, and just on pre-orders, goes silver! In 1 week,
2 million copies of the album were sold.
Towards
the end of November, the girls were offered 1 million pounds (almost
2.5 million Australian dollars) to strip for an adult cable channel - the
girls refuse, however, soon after that, Geri's pre-spice girl nudes come
back to haunt her. By December, the girls win 3 Smash Hits awards.
Mid December,
and GERI HALLIWELL (Ginger Spice - well, as she's known nowadays, TRAITOR
SPICE) claims in an interview that "Maragaret Thatcher was the first SPICE
GIRL"!!! By the 16th of December, "2 Become 1" is released, and becomes
the years fastest selling record, also debuting at Number One. "SPICE"
the album was still topping the charts world-wide, and it became
the "Biggest selling single of 1996" It sold more than 10 million copies
world wide, in just 7 months.
1997
January,
1997, "Wannabe" is released in the USA, and debut's at Number 11, setting
another record for the highest debut entry by a British band in the USA.
"Who
do you think you are?" is filmed for "Comic Relief " and the Spice's
donation is the biggest ever for 1997, with all profits from the song going
toward the charity.
February
24th, they attended the Brit Awards, and win 2 awards. On the same
night, Geri premiers now infamous Union Jack Dress, and, "pops out" of
her other dress twice, once walking up the stairs to collect the award
with the other girls, and then again on stage, when she raises her hand
up in the air! By March, "Mama/Who do you think you are?" had debuted at
Number One - and "Wannabe" had become the biggest selling single of all
time. Impresive, eh?! In that same month, the girls win the award for "London's
favourite band" and "International Hit of the year (Wannabe)"
By April,
a deal with Pepsi (above: Mel C + Victoria) is signed. They visit "The
Cannes Film Festival " and annouce an upcoming Spice Girls movie (below)
which
went on to be called "SpiceWorld" By June, "SpiceWorld" started being shot,
and, by late August, filming had finished.
By October,
the new LP "SpiceWorld" hits number 1, and so does the Mardi-gras style
single "Spice Up your life" kicking Elton John's tribute to the late Princess
Diana off the top spot. In that month, they proved all their critics
wrong, by singing their first FULL live show, in Istanbul (below).
November
the 5th, the girls win "Best group" award @ the MTV Europe Awards,
beating OASIS, Which, obviously, pissed it's band members Liam and Noel
off - and it was after the award, that OASIS' brother's started flooding
us all with insults about the SPICE GIRLS....and after all this, the girls
still say they are one of their fave groups! Now THAT'S too nice girls!
In the
same month, Simon Fuller their manager, is fired, and they start
to manage themselves, although the press reports that Geri became the unnoficial
manager of the band. On a trip to Spain, the girls were booed off stage,
reason: unknown - still.
December
the 2nd, the Girls perform at a Royal event, and, Geri nearly popped
out again, preventing her from curtseying the Queen. "Too Much"
goes straight to number one in it's first week released.
1998
Victoria
(above) and soccer player, DAVID BECKHAM, announce their engagement, kicking
off the New Year with a bang. They are to be married late next year. By
February, the girls' first tour kicks off in Dublin. All goes smoothly
until the release of "Stop" which only debuts at number 2, ending the Girls'
winning streak of consecutive number ones. However, this dosent stop the
Ameican 30 day tour dates from being sold out in 12 minutes, though!
May 31st,
GERI HALLIWELL "Ginger Spice" becomes "Traitor Spice" (below) as she announces
she is "leaving the group due to differences between the girls"
On June
the 9th, the girls do their 1st official appearance without Geri, performing
"Viva Forever" with Pavarotti, for Bosnian War children.
Mid July,
"Toilet Spice" George Michael said on a live chat session that he thought
Geri was the only important SPICE girl, which lit a very fiery spark among
loyal Spice fans.
July
20th, Mel B is set to Releas a track WITHOUT the other 3 girls, this track
is with Missy Misdemeanour Eliot, called "I think I want you back".
On the
same day, "Viva Forever" is released, and debuts at Number
one.
MTV in
the USA decides they would rather not play SPICE GIRLS on their so called
"Music" shows. I, the webmaster of SPICEJAM. in mid July started a boycot
on MTV called Anti MTV . With great support from No.1 Spice Sites
such as American Spice and DK200's SPICE ZONE, We shipped off the 64 emails,
932 signatures, and 3 90 minute cassettes of people ringing up a ANTI MTV
Hotline (which has since been closed) to Mtv, and, 2 months later...still
no reply.
The girls
announce that they will be recording a song for the "South Park: THE MOVIE"
Soundtrack. Other artists to do songs include Madonna, Blur and U2.
The Girls
also declare in an interview that they will survive as a foursome.
Australia's Music know-it-all, Molly Meldrum, asked Spice Girl fans across
Australia if they would still watch the girls live as a foursome - the
response was VERY positive - Molly said in his weekly article in TV WEEK
that "this is the time to get them down here" It is rumoured they will
be touring Australia at the end of the year.
The girls
announce that they will go on without Geri, and also that they will be
endeavouring solo projects. At this stage, Mel B has relesed her first
Spice-less efforts with Missy E, which debuted at Number 1 in the UK, and
number 12 here in Australia, and Mel C performs a duet with Bryan Adams,
yet to be released in Australia.
Mel B
becomes Mel G, after her marriage to fionce Jimmy Gulzar. All 3 Spice's
are invited, but Not Geri. The song "Goodbye" get's it's world premier
in the US on a Philidelphia radio station, which is later recorded and
sent in REAL AUDIO form to subscribers of the AMERICAN SPICE MALING LIST.
The track wont be released until after Late November in Australia.
